Is a Golden Retriever Right for You?
While we think Golden Retrievers are one of the greatest things on Earth, they're not right for everyone. Here are a couple of points to think about if adding a golden to your household is the right decision for you.
Goldens Shed -- ALOT! While they shed their coats twice a year, you'll have hair EVERYWHERE (on your couch, on your clothes and yes, even in your food.) There's a reason many golden owners have tan carpet, clothes and cars! Goldens require a minimum of once a week grooming to keep their coats in good condition.
Goldens are inside dogs -- so unless you plan on living in your backyard, plan on them being with you inside. Goldens want to be where you are and will often follow you from room to room and will often follow you into closets and bathroom.
Goldens are very intelligent. Intelligence is great but you have to keep them mentally stimulated. Otherwise, you might see destructive behaviors such as digging, barking, destruction of your property (including carpet, drywall and window casings) or they could learn to chew on themselves.
Goldens are good with children. However, they do not have infinite tolerance. Parents need to supervise BOTH the children and the dog.
